Vitrine XIV: Marlene & Hans Poelzig

Poelzig Weeks: In the next weeks I will present a changing series of original drawings by Hans Poelzig in combination with segments of Stone that were the original terrace stone from their family home designed by his wife the architect and sculptor Marlene Poelzig in Berlins Westend. Three years ago during the same time of the year the house got destroyed after month long protest. Parallel to the changing material I will uncover some facts about this case but also focus on the couples continuos and lasting collaboration as artists and parents. I don’t have details on the drawings but based on the images of Marlene I tell myself the drawings are sketches or a study by Mr.Poelzig of Mrs.Poelzig:)

The Poelzig family home and studio in Berlin-West-End was built in 1930 to a design by the sculptor and architect Marlene Poelzig (also known as Moeschke-Poelzig). Her husband was the renowned architect Hans Poelzig. The house is an outstanding example of modernist architecture and of the emancipation of female architects in the early 20th century. The floor plan, furnishings and garden of the property at Tannenbergallee 28 are still largely intact today. The roof was significantly altered after 1945 in line with conservative post-war architecture. In the summer of 2020, a petition called for the preservation and protection of the building, which was steadily decaying and threatened with demolition, and almost 5,000 signatures were collected.Since then, an initiative of citizens, building culture experts and interested parties has been working to preserve the remains of the building and to recognize the architect’s life’s work - representative of the many underappreciated biographies of female architects and master builders. The house was demolished in fall 2021.
